A One-Act Play
This suspenseful and witty play by Douglas James follows the encounter between Gerrard, a cultured playwright, and an Intruder, a criminal on the run.
The Intruder enters Gerrard's cottage with the intent to murder him and assume his identity to escape the police. However, Gerrard's presence of mind and quick thinking turn the tables on the criminal.
Character Sketch
Gerrard
Cool, nonchalant, and witty. A playwright who uses his theatrical knowledge to fabricate a story and trap the intruder.
The Intruder
A criminal wanted for a cop's murder. Though he thinks he is smart, he is overconfident and easily manipulated by Gerrard's narrative.
Plot Highlights
Intruder: "Put those paws up!"
Gerrard: "This is all very melodramatic... 'Nonchalant' is your word, I think."
Gerrard: "If you shoot, you’ll hang for sure. If not as yourself, then as Vincent Charles Gerrard."
Gerrard convinces the intruder that he too is a criminal being hunted by the police. He shows his "disguise outfit" (false moustaches) as proof and offers a ride in his car to escape. Instead, he pushes the intruder into a cupboard and locks him in.
